Practice Updates
Afternoon Closure for Training
The practice will be closed for Gateshead wide training from 1pm
Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group organises training for all GPs across Gateshead. The Walk in Centre and GatDoc Out of Hours service will be providing urgent cover
Email Scam
We have received a warning from the Local medical Committee about a particularly unpleasant email scam that is currently doing the rounds.
It appears that patients are being emailed with scam blood results, told that they are abnormal and that they must see their GP urgently. The email claims to be from a doctor.
Whilst most patients will see this as a scam, it is nevertheless distressing and disturbing, particularly for patients who have had blood tests and awaiting results.
Glenpark Medical Practice does not currently use email to communicate results except by specific prior agreement with patients. Any emails from us never ask for personal details, or log in details.

Change to prescription system
We are undertaking a major review of our prescription system. Safety is our top priority, particularly as prescriptions are becoming more complex. From 1st January 2014, we are training up specialists prescribing clerks, we will require 48 hours to process prescription requests and the prescription line hours are changing to 11am - 2pm.

Nurse Practitioner
We are delighted to welcome Sr Amelia Kerr to the team as a nurse practitioner.
What is a Nurse Practitioner?
A nurse practitioner is a nurse who has undertaken specialist training so that they are able to issue prescriptions and deal with a wider range of problems, including the vast majority of conditions that arise on an urgent basis, such as:
- acute back and musculoskeletal pains
- urinary tract infections
- vomiting and diarrhoea
- sore throats and tonsillitis
- chest infections
- ear infections
- side effects or problems relating to contraception
Chronic Long Term Conditions
Sr Kerr will also be doing many of the reviews for patients with long term conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, asthma and chronic bronchitis (COPD).
Other long term problems that Sr Kerr can deal with include blood pressure monitoring and treatment. She will also do other review appointments, at the request of your doctor.
Is There Anyone She Won't See?
By this we mean see professionally in surgery, not personally!
There are some conditions and groups of patients that her advanced training does not cover, such as:
- Children under the age of 2 years
- Problems related to mental health, including depression reviews
If there is anything that Sr Kerr does not feel confident managing, she always has access to the on call GP for advice or can book a review appointment with a doctor if more appropriate.
